A key feature of science fiction is the presence of something impossible in the work, something that does not exist in the real world, well, at least, the existence of this has not yet been proved. These can be mystical creatures, magic, mythical characters, fairy-tale heroes, impossible natural phenomena, manipulations with the human mind and body, and so on. It is believed that such works are intended exclusively for a teenage audience, for children who have not yet grown up or do not want to grow up to serious works, philosophical books with a deep meaning. This is a stereotype that is densely embedded in our heads, and, like any other, it needs a refutation.
The benefits and value of fiction
In fact, any science fiction, like books in general, apart from pulp fiction, fulfills its most important and primary function - to educate and educate. Even science fiction for preschool children primarily teaches them some useful things: to empathize and sympathize, to help others. Such works are very primitive, because the child still does not know how to reason in full force. But there are books in which the presence of some fantastic creature is not the most important thing in the plot. The author includes such “something” in his creation for the sake of reading thrills, and the main idea is usually based on a philosophical, social, moral or political subtext.
If someone’s mind has left a trace of the stereotype that science fiction cannot be interesting for an adult with taste, we offer you novelties of science fiction that are worth reading to dispel this myth.
Scientific
Science fiction is based on fantastic assumptions in the exact, natural or human sciences. Usually, the author describes in detail the innovative discovery and how it changed the life, life and customs of people. Here are two recent examples:
- Sylvain Neuvel and his book Sleeping Giants was published recently - in 2016. This work is about the contact of man and an extraterrestrial, frightening and even mysterious beginning, described by a rather knowledgeable person who outlined in detail one of the variations of our future.
- "The Long Way to the Little Angry Planet," debuting writer Becky Chambers very similar to the famous and much-loved novel by Douglas Adams "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy." The theme of the cosmos, extraterrestrial existence, and the possible travel of a person to another galaxy in the foreseeable future is also disclosed here.
Humorous
Humorous fiction, that is, the combination of fictional and comic, originated in antiquity. In a comic form, it is most simple and interesting to give out your ideas and clothe the vices of society, government and humanity as a whole.
Two sci-fi novels Terry Pratchett Guard! Guard! ” and "Sisters"- This is a kind of fairy tales for an adult audience, where, as in children's books, there is love, good, evil, witches, a pinch of the fairy world, and this dish is served with humor.
Historical
Historical fiction is suitable for people who love facts, but in some places modified to give the work this very “fantasticness”. The most popular in the genre are books about war, military operations, stories about soldiers and military leaders.
- Yuri Korchevsky in his book “Guard, into the fire!” uses the topic of time travel that we love so much. The novel is similar to the famous domestic film “We are from the Future”, dedicated to the movement of a person from the present to the heroic past of glorious ancestors who defended the fatherland.
- The work of the Fourth by Sergey Kalashnikov - this is the prototype of the same “We are from the Future” and the aforementioned work, the main characters are our contemporaries, who were taken by surprise, finding themselves in the past at the height of the war.
Love
Love science fiction is not built according to the standards of classics: a feeling is born not between human beings, but among representatives of different worlds, planets or even galaxies.
- Daria of Jordan and her Fox Enchantment with a royal joke, Pan Girsoel reveals not only the very interesting fantasy world of the Listerpeig Duchy, but also the power of love, which does not cease to operate even in parallel reality.
- Elena Litvinova in her book “What Dragons Dream of” tells about the most popular creatures of the fantasy world - dragons. But are they real dragons with fiery breathing, wings and sparkling eyes? Maybe this is something else? In this paradoxical world the reader has to understand.
Space
Space science fiction is a very popular type of fantasy, since the closest, but at the same time farthest from man is the cosmos, where he constantly strives and dreams of so much. Virtual reality and the world of computer games can replace it, but from this metamorphosis it will not cease to be a dangerous and gloomy place full of surprises and surprises.
- The Effect of the Gates by Anna Orekhova - This is a fantasy, more like a detective story, whose actions one way or another take place in space. There is also a love line, and a mystical, in general, a book for every reader’s taste.
- The book of Mikhail Makhov "Endless World"- This is a book about virtual reality, e-sports and that "there are no former gamers."
Russians
- Turning to exclusively domestic fiction, a book can be distinguished from the novelties "Practical work on the inhabitants of the swamp" Alexandra Cherchen. This is a novel about the mythical world of swamp creatures, full of secrets and mysteries. It has quite visible folklore roots, so the work will delight connoisseurs of the folk epic.
- Vadim Panov and his work “Reflection”- This is philosophical science fiction, consisting of six different plots interwoven into one story about people fighting for the reflected evil that takes human lives.
For kids
Children, whatever one may say, are the target audience of science fiction literature, they love fabulous creatures, adore cunningly made-up worlds, and no less than adults dream of space.
- Fred Adra and a series of books about "Fox Ulysses" - This is an incredible story that will make a child experience all the feelings at once: delight, and experience, and sadness, and laughter. This is a very kind and entertaining book, understandable and close to the child.
- I would also like to recommend a series of books about the young sorceress Nina, a writer Mooney Witcher. The girl, together with her two-legged and four-legged friends, is fighting evil, trying to help her grandfather-wizard, from whom she was given a magic gift.
