(326 words) Psychologism in a work of art is an author’s attempt to convey the inner world of his character through feelings, experiences, thoughts, desires. Each writer, in his own way, tries to reveal the hero, using certain techniques.
Psychology in the works of I. Turgenev is often called secret - this quality was noted even by P.V. Annenkov. And indeed: the author rarely writes what specific emotions his character experiences, but at the same time describes in detail all the changes in appearance and behavior. A good example here is the following episode from the novel Fathers and Sons:
He began to imagine Anna Sergeyevna, then other features gradually emerged through the beautiful appearance of a young widow. "Sorry and Katie!" Whispered Arkady into the pillow, on which a tear had already dripped ....
Initially, the hero was in love with Anna Sergeyevna, then he met Katya, who took a place in his heart. Turgenev does not tell the reader this directly - he must understand this himself through the course of thoughts and actions of Arkady, to feel a subtle change in his state.
The character of Mr. N. is revealed in a curious way in the first-person novel Asya. At first he talks about his windy youth, about his openness to the world, and at the end we see his spinelessness and cowardice, which are the logical consequence of his behavior. It seems that he does not notice Asi's interest in him, does not analyze his feelings and ignores her. Each time the girl appears before him differently - in this way she tried to get the main character's attention.
Turgenev does not give unambiguous answers when he prescribes the characters of the characters in his works. If the hero is embarrassed and does not understand what he is feeling, then the reader, based on the context, can only make an assumption of what the hero feels, because the author’s position in the texts is not disclosed. In this way, the writer manages to subtly convey vague and developing sensations, such as love, confusion, spontaneous thoughts.
Turgenev paid more attention to the physical manifestations of emotions (facial expressions, gestures, palpitations, breathing, etc.), as well as to the train of thoughts through which he gave readers hints of the feelings of heroes. In his opinion, both a social conflict and a person should be considered from the inside, so the writer should be a psychologist in his works and teach his audience this art.
