(434 words) On a long night, men play cards. Hermann is a young engineer, the only one who watches the game from the outside. He explains non-participation by saying that "he is not able to sacrifice the necessary in the hope of producing the unnecessary." In the morning, during a conversation, a certain Tomsky intrigues all the players with an unusual story. His grandmother-countess once lost a huge amount of money. Her husband flatly refused to get her out of this situation, so she had to turn to Count Saint-Germain for help, since he had the money. Instead, he revealed to the countess the secret of three cards that must be put in a row to win. The countess did not share this secret with any of her relatives. Only once she felt sorry for the young man who was lost and revealed a secret to him, but she made a promise from him that he would never sit down to play again. Then he died in poverty, having squandered all his millions.
This mystical story deeply affected the young Hermann. The idea that he might be the one to whom the secret would also be revealed did not give him rest. Each time the hero seemed to be attracted to the house of an elderly countess, but Hermann did not understand how to find out the secret. Suddenly he saw a young girl in the window of a house. And this “meeting” decided his fate.
The girl in the house is Lizaveta Ivanovna, a pupil of the countess. She patiently helped the capricious old woman, who plagued her with her reproaches. The girl suffered, cried in her room and dreamed that someday a young man would rid her of these burdens. And here, opposite the window, every day Lizaveta began to notice a man looking directly at her. Hermann turned out to be in love, who wrote letters to the girl and demanded a date. Once Lizaveta surrenders and in a letter tells Hermann how to get into the house, namely in Lizaveta’s room, while she and the countess are at the ball.
Having entered the house, Hermann examines the office of the old countess and hides here. The ladies are back. The hero waited until the countess was left alone. He went out to her and asked to tell him the secret of the three cards, explaining that he knew exactly how to manage the money. The old woman was silent. Then Hermann took out a gun, which scared the countess to death. The hero goes to Lizaveta’s room and informs her of the countess’s death. The poor girl realizes that she was not interested in the guest.
At the countess's funeral there were a lot of people. Among them was Hermann. Approaching the coffin, he saw that the deceased, squinting with one eye, looked at him mockingly. That very night the spirit of the dead countess came to him, telling him the secret of the three cards. “Three”, “seven” and “ace” will bring Hermann a win, but only if you put one of these cards a day. In exchange for sacred knowledge, he is obliged to marry Lizaveta.
"Three" brings the hero a win, as well as the "seven". But instead of the “ace”, Hermann received the “Queen of Spades”, who, like the deceased, grinned at him. The man went crazy, and Lizaveta successfully married.
