Among the guests - a local landowner, one of the main aristocrats of the county Pythagoras Pythagorovich Chernokutsky. In the past, Chernokutsky was a prominent cavalry officer. But there was one unpleasant story: either he, or they gave him a slap in the face, and he retired. Nevertheless, Chernokutsky always appeared where his regiment had been, and came to see officers with gentlemen. He married a pretty woman, while taking a decent dowry.

After lunch, the general shows the guests his mare Agrafena Ivanovna, which is admired by the guests. The general wants to buy a stroller to harness the mare there.

Expecting to profitably sell the stroller, Chernokutsky invites the gentlemen to his dinner.

After playing a whist and drinking wine, Chernokutsky is home in the morning. His pretty wife, unaware of anything, gets up in the morning, puts herself in order and forgets that it is already noon, and her husband is still sleeping. Here guests arrive - gentlemen officers. Awakened by his wife, Chernokutsky is hiding inside a stroller, which is standing in a barn.Upon seeing that the owner is not at home, the guests decide to see the stroller without him. Seeing that the crew was unremarkable, the general looks inside, sees the landowner there, slams the door and leaves.
