: In order to resurrect the dead son, the father buries him in a cemetery where the dead come to life, but a demon infuses into the body of the child and kills his mother. The father destroys his son and, maddening, revives his wife.
The action takes place in the fictional town of Ludlow, in Maine, USA.
Part one
Dr. Louis Creed was offered a leadership position at a university hospital, and he, together with his wife and two children, moved from a metropolis to a small town closer to work.
Louis Creed - middle-aged man, loving husband and father, head physician at a university hospital, does not believe in supernatural
On the day of his arrival, Louis met an old man, Jude Crandall, who lived next door, behind a busy road.
Jude Crandall, Louis's 83-year-old neighbor; peppy and agile old man; possesses wisdom and great life experience; supports Louis in difficult times
Soon, Jude became Louis as his father, whom he lost at the age of three.
The old man said that many animals die on the road, which children have been burying for decades in a forest cemetery, behind Louis’s house. A few weeks later, Jude took his new neighbors to this cemetery, where the graves were arranged in a spiral. Behind the cemetery, according to Judah, were lands that once belonged to the Mikmak Indian tribe.
In November, Thanksgiving, the wife and children went to visit their parents, and Louis stayed home. In the evening, the daughter’s favorite cat was hit by a truck.Knowing how dear this cat is to a girl, Jude led Luis along the path leading from the pet cemetery to a vast plateau where the Mikmaks once buried the dead. The Indians left this place, believing that he was "spoiled" by the evil spirit of Wendigo.
Wendigo - the evil spirit of the Mikmak Indians living in an abandoned Indian cemetery
Jude told Louis to bury the cat here. Later, the old man said that the pet cemetery is the eve of the Mikmak cemetery, there is also some strength there, but there is much more on the plateau. As a child, Jude buried his dog on a plateau, he came to life and lived for many more years.
This plateau was known to those who wanted to return their favorites. When Louis asked if people were buried there, Jude got scared and answered in the negative. It seemed to the doctor that the old man was lying and something seemed to be controlling him.
The next morning, the cat returned home. His movements became inhibited; while hunting, he displayed excessive cruelty; he stank of an excavated grave.
From the touch of a cat, Louis trembled, and he with difficulty restrained himself so as not to kick him. He seemed slippery, dirty ... in a word, disgusting.
Louis hated the cat, and his daughter did not want to play with him because of the stink. Wife Louis said nothing.
Part two
In the spring, Dr. Gage's son, who had recently learned to walk, jumped out onto the road where a truck hit him.
Gage is Louis's little son; died just learning to walk
In despair, Louis decided to return his son with the help of the Mikmak cemetery. Trying to dissuade a friend, Jude talked about a man who buried his dead son on a plateau. The young man who came to life became the embodiment of the evil omniscient demon, and his father had to kill him. Mikmaki believed that Wendigo moved into the guy.
Jude believed that the Native American cemetery had power over those who had ever been there. It made Jude bring Louis to the plateau, and now forces the doctor to take his son there.
Despite Judah's warnings, Louis carried out his crazy plan. Having persuaded his wife and daughter to leave, the doctor opened the grave of his son and carried him to a plateau. On the way through the fog, Louis saw a huge creature, accompanied by a stench of rotting meat.
For a moment, something dark gray flickered in the fog, and its blurry, fuzzy outline was more than sixty feet high. ‹...› Two flashes of yellow-orange flashed. Something like eyes.
Now Louis noticed that the graves on the plateau are also arranged in a spiral, and realized that the pet cemetery is a trap that lures people into the paws of Wendigo
Meanwhile, the daughter of Luis began to have terrible nightmares about what her father was going to do, the girl cried in a dream. Due to her daughter's nightmares, Rachel was seized with a bad feeling, and she went home.
Rachel Creed - Louis's wife, a Jewess, married against the will of her parents; because of the psychological trauma suffered in childhood, he is afraid of death and everything connected with it
On the way, Rachel called Jude. The old man promised to stop Louis from doing stupid things, but could not keep his words - some kind of power lulled him at the moment when Louis returned to go to the Mikmak plateau with his dead son in his arms.
Returning from the plateau in complete exhaustion, Louis fell asleep.
Part three
While the doctor was asleep, the creature that moved into the dead Gage, took a scalpel from his bag, went to Jude and killed him. Then the monster killed Rachel, who returned and decided to visit her neighbor without going home.
It was Gage. His face was not black, but smeared with mud and dried blood. And he staggered, as if he had been made up of stranger, coarse hands from separate pieces.
Waking up, Louis saw dirty traces of small legs on the floor, found that the doctor’s bag was missing a scalpel, and realized what had happened. Using a lethal dose of morphine, Louis killed the cat, Gage, and burned Jude's house along with the corpses.
The doctor’s body did not finally burn the wife’s body, but carried it to the Mikmak plateau. He believed that Rachel would return the same as before, since she had died recently, and did not realize that he was ruled by Wendigo.
Epilogue
Louis did not wait long. Soon he heard heavy footsteps behind him. Dead Rachel put a hand on his shoulder and said in a hollow voice: "Darling."
